INTRODUCTION
figure is given in 291, ioi32, and H 26, but is lacking in the other
redactions (and in Fsk.).
10. J 1361. After HåvarSr hpggvandi has seen E>orger8r
Hplgatrpll, it says, “Eandem etiam Sigvaldus . . . vidit”. To this
corresponds in F 19219: “{xetta ser nu Sigvaldi”. In 291, 11629,
H 30, 510, 818, the Jåmsvikings tell Sigvaldi of what they have
seen. Which is the more original of these two accounts is open
to question.
x 1. J 13716. Twenty of Vagn’s men die of their wounds during
the night = F 19514. The other redactions have ten (291, 12014,
H 31, 510, 8 8 24). Here too it is uncertain which is the more
original.
12. J I407-12. In the mention of the later fate of the Icelandic
poets, only Einarr skalaglamm and EorSr prvhpnd are named,
as also in F 203 (lacuna in 291) ; 510, ioi20, adds Vigfuss Viga-
Glumsson, while H omits the whole passage.
This list shows that original features have been preserved in J,
where alterations have been made in some of the other redac-
tions. A few other points could be added here, but they are either
of little or of doubtful significance, and they could not affect the
picture in any essential. It is clear that in a number of cases J
can be used as a criterion by which to distinguish primary and
secondary readings in the other redactions.
The task is much more difficult when we now attempt to con-
sider the passages where J stands alone in disagreement with all
other redactions. We can first however divide the distinctive
features in J into two groups, in each of which the variations
show a certain cognate character.
a. The oldest Danish history. J differs from the other redac-
tions in the following passages (for practical reasons the number-
ing is continued from the list above) :
13. J 89-9013. The passage begins at once with Gormo rex
Daniæ. Arnfinnr jarl and his sister are not named as the parents
of Knutr hinn fundni; the two courtiers who find Knutr are said
to be of Norwegian origin (8912). Then comes the brief genea-
logy, see above no. 1.
14. J 9021. Klakk-Haraldr is called “Haraldus Rex Holsatiæ”,
