NOTES
As was mentioned above, AJ speaks (II 14) of having sent
copies of Brevis comm. to King Christian IV, to whom the work
was dedicated1, to the two chancellors (Niels Kaas and Arild
Huitfeldt) and others. All of these copies were certainly in-
scribed with a dedication in the author’s own hånd. The present
editor knows two such dedication-copies, one in the University
Library, Reykjavik, and one in the Royal Library, Copenhagen.
The former bears the following dedication: Omnibus modis cla-
rissimo viro, Doet. Petro Severini, Serenissimi Regis Daniæ et
Norwegiæ archiatro, Dno suo colendo, d(ono) au(toris). The
recipient was the royal physician Peder Sørensen (1514—1602),
whom AJ must have got to know in 1592-3, since Sørensen was
one of those who wrote their names in AJ’s notebook (see III
120).—The dedication in the copy in the Royal Library reads
thus: Magnifico Domino, Generis splendore, sapientiå, prudentiå,
et reliquarum virtutum laude conspicuo, Dn. Hachoni Ulfstand,
Dno de Kirkebierg, sereniss. Principis, D. Christiani IIII. electi
Daniæ etc. Regis aulæ magistro, Regni Danici Quattuorviro et
arcis Regiæ Malmogiensis Præsidi offert Aut.—Here the reci-
pient was Hak Ulfstand (1535—94)> Master of the Royal
Household and from 1590 a member of the regency council
(Lord Marshal from 1593).
From an entry in the accounts of the Treasurer, Enevold
Kruse, 22/5 15932, it appears that on that date he paid AJ 30
rigsdaler, as acknowledgement for Brevis comm., on behalf of
King Christian and on instructions from Arild Huitfeldt, who
had presumably obtained this reward for AJ, the first public
recognition of his literary work.
