transferred to Skålholt. Among the manuscripts subsequently bound in
Skålholt whose bindings have been examined, is MS AM 351 fol., a
law-book written in the 1360s. Two strips from one leaf of parchment
were used as headbands for the spine. They come from a large-sized
hymnary with musical notation on four red lines, written c. 1400,
containing part of three hymns for the Common of the saints, Deus
tuorum militum, Rex gloriose martyrum, and Iste confessorf Another
is MS AM 138 4°, a law-book written shortly after 1500 (see
Kålund, AM 1, p. 427). For the repair of this manuscript, the binder
used strips from one Icelandic-vemacular manuscript, and from five
liturgical manuscripts as follows:
a) One leaf, consisting of about a dozen strips, from a Bible, or part of a
Bible. The written space measures c. 25x18,5 cm on two columns with 37/38
lines to the page. It was probably written in the mid-fourteenth century, and
contains 3 Reg. 8,30-9,15.
b) Part of a leaf of a breviary lectionary, consisting of two strips with 13
lines visible of which the first four are partly mutilated. It comes from a
closely-written manuscript with the line measuring 11,5 cm, probably from the
late fourteenth century. The contents are part of two sermons of which the first
remains unidentified:
[In festo unius virginis martiris...]... Jsta sunt preciosa camis monilia
ista sunt corporis ornamenta meliora. Beate femine que dominicam fidem
tenentes ac sexu suo forhores non solum ad coronam proximauerunt sed et
ceteris exemplum de sua constantia prehibuerunt.
Jn festa (sic) vnius virginis non martiris. |.....] Augustinus in libro De
uirginitate. Lee. i. In festo uirginis predicanda est uirginitas. Hoc isto sermone
suscepimus. Adiuuet ad hoc christus uirginis filius ... natus uirginali connubio
spiritualiter coniugatus. Cum [ipsa igitur uniuersa ecclesia uirgo sit despon-
sata../..] Nornen etemum dabo eis... Nam ideo fortassis et nornen [dictum
est quod eos quibus datur distinguit] a ceteris. Pergite igitur saneti (dei) pueri
[atque puelle.... Laudate dominum.. .j amate ardentius cui placetis attentius.
Lee. iiij. (?) Lumbis accinctis et lucemis accensis expectate dominum
uirgines... Jte in hec sequimini agnum quia et agni caro utique uirgo est.

c) A mutilated leaf consisting of six strips from a breviary lectionary. The
written space probably measured c. 25x16 cm with 22 lines to the page in two
columns and shows a large, clear fourteenth-century hånd. The rubrics are in
red; a multicoloured decorated initial at the beginning of the homily extends
