‘Gracias agimus tibi’.
The whole range of the St. Olav Masses, in die, 29 July, in
translatione, 3 August, in octaua, 5 August, and per octauam, were
probably well-known in Iceland, although very little of them has
survived.
MS AM Access. 7b, from AM 53 8° is a leaf from the Sanctorale of
an Icelandic missal, written c. 1400 or later. The written space, in two
columns, measures c. 22,5x14,5 cm. It has musical notation on four
black lines. See Plate 32.
This leaf could hardly have belonged to a regular Sanctorale. It
contains a St. Olav Mass, which ends on the verso, first column, line
3, followed by the alleluia-verse ‘Misso herodes’ for the Decollation of
St. John the Baptist, 29 August, and the gradual of the feast of St.
Jerome, 30 September, ‘Os iusti’, with the alleluia-verse ‘Iste (est) qui
ante deum magnas uirtutes operatus (est) et omnis terra [doejtrina eius
replet[a est]’, which is usually found as a response. It may have been
written as a supplement to an earlier book.
The text of the St. Olav Mass begins imperfeetly in the collect:
[Coll.
feliciter peruenire. Per.
