Late-Medieval Breviary Fragments

Copenhagen MS AM 241b VI fol. (see Kålund, AM 1, p. 212) is a
leaf from a small breviary, with a written space of c. 11x9 cm and 22
long lines to the page. The rubrics are written in red. The lessons,
chapters and prayers always begin on a new line; empty spaces in the
preceding lines have been filled in by run-overs. The chants, without
musical notation, are in a smaller hånd than the prose texts. The leaf
contains the Canonical Office from none of Sunday 1 in Lent, or
Dominica prima in Quadragesima, to none of the following Monday,
or Feria ii. See Plates 56-57.
Copenhagen MS AM 241b IX fol., ff. 1-5 (see Kålund, ibid.),
contains notes by Ami Magnusson on this breviary fragment and
extracts from the lessons contained in it. He dated the fragment to c.
1460, ‘manu non erat antiquå, forte circa 1460 vel paulo prius’. As for
the provenance, he says that it belonged to the Church of Eyri in the
Skutilsfjor&ur (Is.), in the diocese of Skålholt. These fragments are also
mentioned in Åmi’s note-books; see below, p. 99.
From the notes made by Årni Magnusson we can see that AM 241b
VI fol., when ceded to him, contained more than the sole extant leaf.
From the leaves available to him, he copied the nine lessons of Sunday
1 in Lent, the three lessons of the following Monday (which survive in
AM 241b VI fol.), and the first two lessons of the following Thursday,
or Feria v. On the contents of this breviary fragment he remarked that
it was very much like the printed Nidaros Breviary, but differed from it
in certain respects. These differences would seem to concern the
breviary lessons.
The Nidaros Ordinary (ON, p. 202) does not specify the lessons for
Sunday 1 in Lent. The Breviary (BN, pp. 133-36), for lessons 1-6,
uses sermon 198 of Caesarius Arelatensis, ‘Dominus et salvator noster
