The only Northern saints are St. Olav, the martyr-king of Norway
( f 1030), and the confessors St. Thorlak of Skålholt (canonized
1199), and St. Jon, first bishop of Holar, 1106-21 (canonized 1200).
It is surprising to find St. Olav only in MSS A and t, while he is
omitted in MS s, and even in the Norwegian Nb. He is, however,
included in the list of saints that MSS c and 5 insert in the prayer after
ps. 150,1.
The second clause, pro remissione, contains the hall-mark of the
prayer, found in all the texts: et pro emundatione cordis et corporis
mei. The nearest parallel I have found to it is in the Deprecatio
Gelasii: ‘Pro emundatione animarum corporumque nostrorum omnium,
ae venia peccatorum.. ,’7 B singles itself out by including a list of
friends and familiars, possibly echoing the missa communis ‘Sancto-
rum tuorum intercessionibus’ (Sp 1448; ManNor MS B c. 1250 = ed.
p. 74), and by further including those qui pro me orant ad dominum,
and enemies.
The third clause, pro salute, has received special treatment in A and
B, and also in t. In A it has been expanded to include ‘our’ Pope and
bishops and kings, those qui pro me orant ad dominum, father,
mother, brothers, sisters, and benefactors. A undoubtedly has a more
festive character than the other texts, of which only Nb mentions the
Pope and the Bishop (antistes). As is well-known, expressions such as
pro regibus nostris should not be taken too literally in liturgical books.
