The oldest votive masses for a friend are in the Bobbio Missal with a series of three,
each rubricated Missa uotiua (HBS 58, 419 sqq.). The rubric ‘for a friend’ seems to
have been taken over from Alcuin’s votive masses Pro amico and Pro amids uiuentibus
(Deshusses, Les Messes d’Alcuin, nos. 12-13); our mass is found inserted among
Alcuin’s votive masses already in the Sacramentary of Trent.
A wealth of prefaces testify to the popularity of this mass. Sp gives three prefaces
(1722-1724), the first of which, ‘VD Cuius omnipotentia deprecanda est’, is derived
from the contestatio of the first Missa uotiua of the Bobbio Missal (423) through the
intermediary of the eighth-century Gelasians. The Echternach sacramentary has two
prefaces, the first one identical with the first Sp preface, while the second one, a very
long text, seems to be unique, ‘VD Qui hominem in principio ad suam creauit
imaginem... ut dignus sit in perpetuo in sanctorum choro adstare ut te semper laudat et
cum angelis,’ etc. A proper prayer in fractione, found in GeG and in Sp, reappears in
Tours, St. Amand, and LeofM.
