spå with the sub-title Das ålteste Denkmal germanisch-nordischer
Sprache (Ettmiiller 1830), his main dating criterion being “the content
of the poem and even more its manner of perception and profound sim-
plicity”.26 A similar view was expressed by Franz Dietrich in an article
on the age of VQluspå (1843): “The unpolished simplicity of the greater
part of the poems of the Older Edda gives the main proof that they be-
long to the blossom of an epic age, anterior to the artificial skaldic
poetry of the 9th century”.27
By the same criteria, some other poems appear to be younger “on ac-
count of their approaching the artificial style of the Nordic skalds”,28
e.g. the two Atli poems,29 and Alvissmdl, which in particular is placed in
immediate proximity to the skaldic poetry by its interest in different
heiti (Koeppen 1837: 65), and poems known only from paper manu-
scripts, such as Hrafnagaldr O dins and Fjplsvinnsmål (Muller 1818:
125; Magnusen 1821-23, quoted above, p. 51). Until Sophus Bugge’s
Edda edition was published in 1867 the distinction between poems
transmitted in medieval vellum manuscripts and poems preserved only
in younger paper manuscripts was less obvious to scholars than it is
today;30 and in particular opinions concerning the age of Hrafnagaldr
were very divided (cf. Scheving 1837: 3-7; Wachter 1838: 28; cf.
Dietrich 1849: 314).
maler nordischer Dichtkunst gehalten. Sein Inhalt, aber noch mehr seine Anschauungs-
weise und hohe Einfachheit sprechen dafur” (Ettmiiller 1847: 50). His words echo Koep-
IX. Jahrh. vorhergieng” (Dietrich 1843: xx-xxi; cf. further Edda 1787: xxxvii-xxxviii
(Preface “Ad Lectorem”); Edda 1818: xvi; Ampere 1833: 421; Koeppen 1837: 53; Du
= J. Grimm 1864—90, vol. 4: 121; cf. Simrock 1851: 423).
30 Cf. Kolbing 1873: 118-19. P.A. Munch (1847: x) distinguished sharply between poems
preserved in medieval vellums and in later paper manuscripts. Also Rosselet pointed to the
secondary value of the paper manuscripts of the poems that are copied from extant exem-
plars (1855: 247).
