fore the collectivity of the divine powers rather than the individual gods.
In either interpretation the circumlocution expresses a religious feeling
typical of these poems.
To an even higher degree this applies to a group of words where the
idea of individual gods is completely left out, namely nouns in neuter
plural, regin, rqgn, råd, hgpt, bgnd, which designate the divinites as
superpersonal powers, “binding” the humans in the primary sense of
‘religio’. For some reason or other the masculine plural tivar, which is
frequent in Eddie poetry, is associated by de Boor with this same group.
Of the neuters only regin is common in the Edda, however, whereas
the group as such is more frequently found in skaldic poetry.89 Bgnd is
rare in the Edda, but frequent in skaldic poetry from ca. 960 to 1010, and
hgpt is not found in the Edda at all and is somewhat rarer in skaldic
poetry than bgnd. Råd is noted once in a skaldic poem (de Boor 1930:
89-90 = 1964: 235-36). It is to be noted that the idea of “religio” in the
sense of ‘binding’ is above all related to the un-Eddic words hgpt and
bgnd. On the other hånd, the Eddie composite -fadir, -fgdr does not oc-
cur in skaldic poetry (de Boor 1930: 85 = 1964: 230). Of the expression
“gods’ children” meaning ‘men’ de Boor gives no example.
After having shown these systematic differences in the religious vo-
cabulary in the Vgluspå-group of the Edda, on the one hånd, and the
skaldic poetry from the decades around 1000, on the other, de Boor sur-
prisingly concludes that this group of skaldic poems is obviously close-
