VIII “VinSandin foma”

The main stave requires vr- in vreidr. A strong case.
--------st. 18.6: vilcat ec, at ij) vreiøir vegiz.
--------st. 27.6: oc væri J?å at Ipér vreiøom vegit.
The full line already has two alliterating lifts without vr- in reidr, so a
reconstructed form is not necessary, but the rules do not prevent its
insertion. This would in faet improve the alliteration, as reidr, which
is the only nornen (i.e. noun or adjective) in the verse, should normal-
ly alliterate.
Prymskvida st. 1.1-2: ReiØr var Joa Vingjrorr, / er hann vacnaøi.
The alliteration is correct in so far as the on-line already has a stave,
but since reidr is a nornen in the first position of the verse, the alliter-
ation would have been better if v- were reintroduced (cf. Lokasenna
st. 27.6 above). However, st. 13.1-2: Reid vard på Freyja / ocfnåsadi
shows that this form of alliteration is used elsewhere in the poem
(Gering 1924: 16f).
Fåfnismål st. 7.3: sæi maØr Jric vreiøan vega.
--------st. 17.3: hvars scolo vreiøir vega.
--------st. 30.3: hvars vreiøir scolo vega.
The alliteration in the full line requires vr- in vreid-, A strong case.
--------st. 33.5-6: berr af reiøi / rqng orØ saman.
The alliteration is perfect, but vr- might be restored both in vreidi and
vrQng. The occurrence of vr- forms of vreidi elsewhere in Fåfnismål
might be an argument in favour of doing so.
Sigrdrifumål st. 27.3: hvars scolo vreiøir vega.
The alliteration in the full line requires vr-. Cf. Fåfnismål 7.3, 17.3
and 30.3.
Atlakvida st. 2.3^1: vin f valhpllo, / vreiøi såz Jieir Huna.
The main stave requires vr- in vreidi. A strong case.
--------st. 13.6-7: råco £>eir vannstyggva / vgllo algræna.
The on-line already has one stave, but since Sievers’s D*-type as a
rule has two, the alliteration would be more normal if vr- were re-
stored in vråku.
Baldrs draumar st. 11.1-2: Rindr berr Våla / f vestrsqlom.
In the verse as it is transmitted in the manuscript (lacuna in the place
of Våla), the alliteration requires Vr- in Vrindr (cf. Munch and Unger
1847a: 109, quoted above, p. 231). Bugge’s emendation (1867: 137),
inserting Vala (Sievers: Våla) has been widely accepted, because it is
very satisfactory as regards its content, and it repairs a verse which
