ible, and by no means statistically significant. The proper assignment of
the material to either of the two periods within each century, at least as
far as the 12th century is concemed, is therefore of paramount import-
ance to a correct conclusion. The problem is that a lot of stanzas cannot
be dated with the required exactitude. Apart from the obvious problem
of poets having been active in two different centuries, and of possible
forgeries, Finnur Jonsson’s assignment of a poem to a particular century
is in many cases open to doubt, above all in the case of anonymous
poems. If de Vries had simply stuck to the datings in Finnur Jonsson’s
edition, it would have been possible to leave the responsibility with the
editor. But because de Vries decided to subdivide the periods into half-
centuries, he had to take the responsibility for assigning a poem to the
first or the second half of the century himself. De Vries chose an overall
solution to this problem which is rather questionable. The undated
poems he simply assigns to the second half of each century, which, he
thinks, in most cases will correspond to historical reality, and which at
all events will not, he hopes, influence the results to any great extent.21
Hans Kuhn objected to this decision (1942: 148 = 1971a: 309), and
maintained that if the questionable stanzas were left out, the asserted in-
crease in the second half of the 12th century would vanish altogether.
From a general point of view, de Vries’s overall assigning of undated
stanzas to the second half of each century is clearly untenable, as the
dates will thereby be biased in a systematic and one-sided way. The re-
maining question is only whether he may be right in assuming that the
consequence of this bias is so tiny that it can be neglected.
For the 12th century de Vries registered 68 OSinn-kennings, 13 from
the first half of the century, and 55 from the second half - undated
