Editiones Arnamagnæanæ. Series B - 01.10.1968, Side 40
XXXVIII
Finnur Jónsson expands the abbreviations hm and v as
hanum and varu (cf., however, the Hb-edition, p. lxi). In the
present edition they are expanded as honum and voru,
cf. 31 and 34 vorum, which is written in the MS vorú.
In Hb the initial letters of the following words
show faint traces of red: 4 guð, 13 Adam, 19 Sun,
21 Ek, 77 Sveín-, 84 Jnnan, 87 Man, 89 J1, 91
Cipressus, 92 Enn, 101 Líf, 104 Seth, 113 Enn,
118 Litlu, 130 Sipan, 132 Enn.
Two closely related MSS in the Arnamagnæan
Collection 281.4to and 597b.4to, contain excerpts
from Hb8, including a short excerpt from Leg. on
ff. 98v and 48r-v respectively. There are only a very
few insignificant variants in the two texts. The
same excerpt, also with a few variants, is found
in AM 124.8vo, f.llv. It is impossible to determine
whether this transcript derives from 281 or 597b or
from one of the now lost MSS resembling these, that
are known to have existed6 7.
The sources
As far as the sources are concerned, A falls into
two sections:
1-108 This section, the account of Seth’s journey
to Paradise, is a rendering of L 1-96. The translation
is fairly accurate but there are some few deviations:
A 5 “firir sér ok sínu afkvæmi”. Lacking in L 2.
A 7 “er allt hans kyn skylldi grœða”. Lacking in L 4.
A 7-9 “var Adam siðan ok hans kona sett niðr idal þeim
er Ebron het”, L 4-5 “Veniens enim Adam in vallem
Ebron cum Eva uxore sua”.
