and this means that the relationship between all
the B texts and A cannot be determined. The B texts
must be compared with each other within the sec-
tions of the text that survive in B2.
The younger B texts, B3 8, which date from c. 1800
and later, are corrupt and abridged but at one
point they show a clear agreement with A against B1:
14-15 og ofrid B1; upp renna AB4 7, upp koma B3,
sem upp lcom B8. They cannot, therefore, derive
from B1.
The B texts divide themselves into three groups,
B1, B2 and B3 8. B2 and B3 8 sometimes agree against
B1, see, for example, the following variants to B:
121 dyrmœtt sœde, 164 þvi, 171 fara, 200 ofann,
227 stolpa, 237 litillre. Elsewhere B1 and B2 agree
against B3-8, see, for example, 124 eirnn tijma,
133 sia, 152 liann, 154 micked, 162 færdvr, 190-91
j ferdvm. Yet elsewhere B1 and B3 8 agree against B2,
see, for example, 140 stridvr og strangvr, 143 þa,
163 steinn, 201 fer, 218-19 ennseigia, 220 þarxslod.
None of the texts B3-8 can be the source for any
of the others. This can clearly be seen from the fact
that all the texts have omissions but not at the same
places. Examples of this are the following:
B3 omits 12-13 vnnde-og1, 29 suórdlaus ogsuórt, 37-38 og—gm,
87-88 giórer-gafvr, 97 effter-firer, 100 sem-honvm, 109-10
hvai—œtlad, 173-174 j-mig\ under, 176-78 sier-hingad, 181-82
og^—eina, 198-99 og—skalf, 206 ogx-best, 221 manz—hófudbein,
224 edasera, 237 sem-steinvm, 252-53 til-œtlad, 260-61
og—gud.
of AM 65a.8vo, and in Bibliotheca Arnamagnæana XX p. 19,
the MSS 281 and 597b are identified as excerpts deriving from
Hauksbók ( = A). The authors of the Handlist do not mention
the numerous Leg. texts in Landsbókasafn, several of which
have been shown to be of significance for textual criticism.
