he built a temple for idol-worship on Mount Gehenna.
The name is not mentioned in Þorláksbiblía, where
it is merely said that he built “eina Hæd, Chamos
Moabita Suijuirdingu, a þui Fialle sem liggur gengt
(sic) Jerusalem, og Molech, Suiuirdingu þeirra Am-
monita”. Moloch (or Molech) was worshipped in
ancient times in the valley of Hinnom (Leviticus
18 and 20, II Kings 23), which lies to the south-west
of Jerusalem (Joshua 15). “Gehenna” is the Greek
name for “the valley of Hinnom”, Hebrew “ge
hinnom”.
That Solomon at the end was punished by apathy
or madness (“fásinni”) (601-2) is not mentioned in
the Bible.
604-17 No single source has been found for this
passage. The first lines, 604-8, probably derive from
some annals. They name which year after the Creation
the scholars Josephus Flavius, Nicolaus Heldvaderus,
Augustinus (?), Johannes Carion and Augustinus
andios (perhaps error for aurelius; identical with
St Augustine of Hippo?) gave as the date for the
birth of Christ. The three first-named give the year
as 3962 (C1-2-3, only C6 has 3967).
Nicolaus Heldvaderus states in Historiarum Sacra-
rum Encolpodion, Copenhagen 1634 (the work is
employed in C 617-31, see below) that the birth of
Christ took place anno mundi 3967 (f. 7v)13.
Johannes Carion’s Cronica appeared in German
in Wittenherg in the year 153214. The work
13. Thott 514.8vo (written 1741, see Katalog KB pp. 368-69)
contains ff. 220v-222v “Eitt Lyted Æfenntyr Vm Adam Hvar
Hann var skapadur og hvad leinge hann stod i synum Heil (sic)”.
This is a rendering of the biblical account of the Fall with some
additions which would seem to derive from 16th- and 17th-century
bible commentaries, Búnting and Heldvaderus. For example,
it is stated that “Gud skapade alla hlute Anno Mundi firer Christi
hingadburd 3967”. See also p. xciv, note 20.
