It is stated 617 that Bethlehem was situated two
miles to the south of Jerusalem; Itinerarium says
one-and-a-half miles (Part 2, p. 4).
617-31 This section, which deals with the Massacre
of the Innocents and Herod’s punishment, is taken
from Historiarum Sacrarum Encolpodion, compiled
by the Dane Niels Heldvad (latinised as Nicolaus
Heldvaderus) and published in 1634. The sub-title
reads as follows: “Det er, En Nye oc Nyttig
Bog, om vor Herris Jesu Christi, sampt hans hellige
Apostlers, Confessorum oc Martyrers Liff oc Leff-
nets Historie, vdi huilcken findis Aaret, Maa-
neden oc Dagen, paa huilcke alting er skeed, oc sig
tildraget haffuer19”. For translation into Icelandic
see p. xcix.
631-34 These lines about the flight into Egypt
agree with the Bible, St Matthew 2.
634-40 The compiler of C has made use of Itinera-
rium. The description of the journey home of the
wise men is taken from the chapter “Susan, en Rose”
pp. 164-65. The information to the effect that the
sufferings of Jesus began on the spot where Adam
and Eve sinned derives from the chapter “Om
Paradijs”, p. 3120.
640-42 In these lines it is stated that there are
