beautiful place to the east of Jerusalem, referring
to the text of Genesis 13, verse 10.
642-45 It is stated here that Judas is said to have
kissed Jesus on the very spot where Satan deceived
Eve. The source is not known. It is further stated
that the 30 pieces of silver which Judas received for
the betrayal were worth 15 “daler” “to us”. This
conversion derives from Heinrich Biinting’s De Mone-
tis et Mensuris Sacræ Scripturæ, p. 14, which was
translated into Danish and printed as an appendix
to Itinerarium.
646-706 This section, together with 760-90, deals
with the way in which each of the twelve Jewish
tribes tormented Jesus and of how they were punished
for it afterwards. The story is printed in Islenzkar
Þjóðsögur og Ævintýri II pp. 52-54, and is also found
in numerous MSS: AM 695d.4to (ff. 18v-20r), AM
83.8vo (ff. 57v-61v), AM 124.8vo (ff. 92-95v) and
Stockholm papp. 8vo nr. 4 (ff. 106v-107v, ends in-
complete); the majority of the MSS containing this
story are found in Iceland, see Skrá III p. 36621. A
few variants from the AM MSS, Stockholm 4 and Lbs
1228.8vo (ff. 85-88r) and IB 390.8vo (ff. 100r-102v)
have been included in the critical apparatus to C.
The following passages in this section derive from
the story “Krossgangan”, which is also employed at
728-60 and 790-800 (see below): 657-59 padann-fet;
666-67 padann-fet; 686-87 padann-fet; 705-6 frá-fet.
21. At the farm Kaldakinn in Haukadalur, Dalasýsla, there is
found a privately owned MS to which the editor has not had
access. According to its title page the MS was written in 1762,
possibly by Jón Egilsson at Vatnshorn (íslenzkar Æviskrár III,
1950, p. 92). It contains, among other items, a number of brief
chapters dealing with historical and biblical characters and
events, including “Um 15 kvalastaði Krists”, “Um kynþáttu
ísraels” and “Af krossinum Kristi”. For the above information
I am indebted to Jón Helgason.
