The sources
The source for KrR must have been a now-lost
prose text of the EF version. Sigurður Jónssonrefersto
it on several occasions, calling it, among other names,
“annáls þáttur” (I 14), “annálsbók” (II 27) and
“annáll” (II 52). In some instances he would appear
to be referring to a poem, for he uses the terms
“kveðlingur” (I 13), “kvæði” (II 28, III 5) and
“ljóð” (V 20), but the material contained in these
stanzas is all found in his customary source, the EF
version and does not appear in any known poem about
the cross-tree (Krosskvæði, Gimsteinn, Sethskvæði).
The terms lcvedlingur, kvœði and Ijóð are thus to be
taken not as references to a source but rather as
metrical padding: as it says in the poem, i.e. my poem
(cf. III 27 annálsríma).
