io 6
Of the total area under cereals io per cent. has thus been
lost. The loss is greatest in the case of spring wheat, no less than
14.9 per cent., and next greatest in the case of rye. Relatively
little winter wheat and barley was grown in the ceded territory.
A considerable part of the ceded territory was comparatively
poor soil from the agricultural point of view. This applies in
particular to the areas ceded along the eastern frontier. For this
reason the yield per hectare in the ceded territory has been
smaller than the average for the whole of Finland, so that the
loss of crops is not quite as big as the percentual loss of arable
land. Table 2 gives the aggregate net yield (harvest minus seed)
for various crops in the whole of Finland, in the ceded territory
and in the present territory, together with the percentual loss;
the figures are in this case averages struck for the years 1935—
37. As about half of the barley grown in Finland is used for
human consumption, the barley crop has been evenly apportioned
between the separate categories »cereals for human consumption«
and »cereals for cattle feeding«.

of the total cereal crop 9.6 per cent.
Another important element in food production is the hay
crop. The area under hay in the ceded territory was about
