Material, seiner intimen kunstgewerblichen Durcharbeitung der
Einzelheiten und, wenn man will, in seiner Italienromantik hat
in Schweden sein Gegenstiick in I. G. Clasons Nordischem Mu-
seum mit einer Art von französischer und flamischer Renaissance,
die sich gern »Wasastil« nennen möchte. Nach schwedischer Art
prachtig in seiner Geste und splendid in seiner Planung, zu gross-
artig, um in vollem Umfange, wie beabsichtigt, durchgefiihrt
werden zu können. Norwegen ist im 19. Jahrhundert von seinem
grossen nationalen Bauwerk, der Wiedererrichtung des Nidaros-
domes, allzu sehr in Anspruch genommen, um am Wettbewerb
auf dieser Bahn der grossen öffentlichen Architektur teilnehmen
zu können. Die Architektur der einzelnen nordischen Lander
erhalt um die Jahrhundertwende neue Impulse, den Naturalismus
bei Boberg, Thorvald Bindesböll und Geselius-Lindgren-Saarinen,
die nationale Romantik bei Carl Westman und Ragnar östberg.
östbergs Stadthaus wird die architektonische Grosstat des
Nordens in den beiden ersten Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts,
bewundert und geehrt jenseits der Nordsee und des Atlantischen
Ozeans. Es wurde indessen nicht der Ausgangspunkt einer Ent-
wicklung, sondern der glánzende Abschluss einer Epoche. Das
selbstándige Finnland tritt in den i92oer Jahren mit Eliel Saari-
nens grossartigen öffentlichen Gebáuden und Stadtplánen hervor.
Und Oslo nimmt neue Aufgaben in Angriff in Arnebergs und
Poulsens Rathausbau, wie Kopenhagen in Kampmanns máchti-
gem Polizeiprásidium. Die Architektur der »neuen Sachlichkeit«
hat kaum in irgend einem der nordischen Lánder Anregung zu
einer Bauweise gegeben, die in ihrer Art ebenso autoritativ wáre
wie die von Nyrop, Clason, östberg oder Saarinen.
Die Malerei der nordischen Lánder im letzten Menschenalter
wird dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass sich allenthalben der Einfluss
der zeitgenössischen französischen Kunst mit ihren neuen Pro-
blemstellungen und Lösungen geltend gemacht hat, in Wechsel-
wirkung mit den nationalen Traditionen und Bedingungen. Die
norwegische Malerei hatte insofern eine bevorzugte Stellung, als
Norwegen selbst in seinem eigenem Lande einen der Bannertráger
und Bahnbrecher der modernen Malerei besass, Edvard Munch,
der seinerseits hinter sich als Ausgangspunkt Christian Krohgs
Naturalismus hatte, norwegisch in seiner Breite und Sicherheit.
Karsten fiihrt konsequent eine Seite von Munchs Schaffen weiter,
Henrik Sörensen eine andere. Munch hat einer ganzen Generation
Anregungen und Ausgangspunkte gegeben. Und gleichzeitig ist
