speak a language different from that of the old ones — and
individual speakers have also changed their language through
time (i.e., at the micro-level).
c The spreading of dialectal differences and phonological
changes in 20th century Icelandic reveals an interesting in-
teraction between sociolinguistic and purely linguistic (or
structural) forces.
Obviously, a lot of work remains to be done in our dialectal project,
RÍN. We are, for instance, just beginning to study the interactions of
the sociolinguistic and structural forces mentioned above. We hope,
however, that we have shown that this is an interesting project that can
help answering some questions although it will also raise a number of
new ones. That is the purpose of all scientific work.
