It is possible that some of the glossary had been revised by Worm
before Stephanius’ copy was made. Some inconsistencies in the ar-
rangement of DG 55 seem to imply this. For instance, in this MS the
letters A—F and T—Þ have their head-words in Roman characters
only (in SLR they are all printed both in runes and Roman charac-
ters), and the translations are partly in Latin and partly in Danish
(in SLR they are all in Latin). The order in SLR is fairly consis-
tently alphabetical, with a few lapses, while in this part of the MS, al-
though the words are arranged according to their initial letters, there
is little further attempt at alphabetical order. F is incomplete, having
only the words beginning Fa-. After these words there is a page and
a half left blank before the heginning of G, obviously to leave room
for the remainder of the F words, which for some reason were never
copied in (although they are present in the printed dictionary).
The middle part of the glossary, G—S, is arranged in a manner
much more similar to that of the final printed version. Most of the
head-words have been transcribed into runes, and the order is much
closer to the alphabetical. A larger proportion of the translation is
also in Latin. This part of the glossary, therefore, had probably been
partially revised and rearranged before it was copied into DG 55.
Under M there seems to have been half a page or more of the exem-
plar omitted in the copying, since a group of 15 entries whose head-
words begin with Ma- are lacking. These cannot have been added to
ihe original glossary in Copenhagen, for the quotations in them are
clearly taken from the same sagas and MSS as were used for the rest
of the entries in DG 55.
Apart from these obviously accidental omissions under F and Ma,
there are many other entries in SLR which are not found in DG 55.8
Allhough some of these must also have been omitted accidentally,
tnost of them wer« clearly never in the original glossary, and must
evidently added to the glossary in Copenhagen confirms thal the copy was not
eompleted before 1640, for this entry was apparently sent to Worm by Jón
Magnússon in that year (see below p. 50).
