gás in the sense in which it is here given in SLR (‘widow’), although it occurs
several times in other senses. It is found in Snorra Edda meaning ‘widow'
(SnE I 536). LI includes the word in an article which is very similar to the
one in SLR, hut ends: "... hæl in Antiq. Cod. Legum, Grafygle / Filius
Nothus, ex fonte natus” (p. 102, s. v. Hæll; see above p. 41). These rather
inaccurate references may have been made from memory.
The reference accompanying two of the quotations is “In codice
legum”. Like Magnús’ “Codex”, this seems to refer to Jónsbók:
*5 Aleiga: Aleigu mal. Quando tota res viri pro mulcta solvitur. — Cf. p. 279:16.
*98 Oknyttir: Og ecki kendur ad oknyttum. — P. 38:5—6: “... þeir menn, er
at slíkum úknyttum verða kendir.” But rather closer is NGL II 242:14 v. 1.
(Nyere By-lov): “oc æighi at uknytum kendir.”
The remaining five quotations are all referred simply to “Lögbók”.
By this also, the compiler probably means Jónsbók, although not all
the quotations are found in that book, and some might equally well
have been taken from Grágás:
*1 Aa: Ef fleiro menn eigu aa saman þa skal skipta henni ad vikum saman
edur smærra. — This seems to be a paraphrase of one of the following pas-
sages, Grágás Ib 122—3, II 509, or Jónsbók (1904), 189. Perhaps the last is
the closest: “Iivervitna er menn eigti fiskiá saman ... þeir skulu skipta vik-
um eða smærum.”
*80 Mále: Male, Mala land. — These words occur in Jónsbók (1904), 128:8,
and Grágás Ib 102:12, II 439:7.
*13 Æs: Æs i bande. ■— The translation “pro palearibus boum qvorum ora iiga-
mine sunt astricta” suggests that the phrase should be Hes i bandi. That it is
a misunderstanding, and not a mere typographical error is shown by the cor-
rect translation of Æs as “or» calcei vel corii”. Hes í bandi is a technical
phrase for a particular method of fastening a liorse or ox (see Árni Magnús-
sons Levned og Skrifter II, 208), and is found in several places in the iaws,
e. g. Jónsbók (1904), 227:8—9: “en ef hess er í bandi eða renni staurr fyrir,
þá eru þat eigi handvQmm hans.” The same passage is quoted in LI, more
fully than in SLR, but the same error of Æs for Hes is found there also, thus
confirming that Guðmundur was responsible for the addition of this entry to
SLR (see above p. 40).
In Gulaþingslög (NGL I 25) the word is spelt hœs. Possibly this was the
