Pugna ViTlORUM ET VlRTUTUM. There are six quotations from this
book, which is mentioned in the list of sources. The book referred to
was an Icelandic translation of the treatise “De Conflictu Vitiorum
et Virtutum” by Bishop Isidore of Seville. The Latin text of this work
is given in Migne (ed.), Patrologia Latina LXXXIII (1862), cols.
1131—1144. It seems that only one fragment of this translation now
survives. This is in AM 655 4to, fragm. XXVI, which consists of only
two leaves, and is printed in Þ. Bjarnarson (ed.),Leifar fornra krist-
inna jrœða íslenzkra (1878), 180—182.
Only one of the six quotations in SLR is included in this fragment.
There is no reference given to the source:
119 Skröpa madur: Varast skalltu ad ej snuist þer atqvædi til þyn er mællt er
til skröpa manna. •—-This corresponds to Leijar, 180:23—25: “Varaztu viþ þat
at æige snúitz þat atquæðe til þín ær mællt ær við skrópa menn.” This again
corresponds to Palrologia, col. 1134:11: “Cave prorsus ne illa sententia tibi
conveniat, qua de hypocritis dicitur.” — Probably AM 655 was not the manu-
script used by Magnús Ólafsson, as the readings are somewhat different, but
he must have used a closely related one. It is clearly the same translation.
The other quotations are from parts of the translation which are
not preserved in AM 655:67
103 Puke: Minstu madur ad þu ert molld og aska og þu ert puke og madkur. —
“Memento quia pulvis es, quia cinis es, quia putredo et vermis es” (1133:6).
— Puke is probably an error for fuke.
87 Munód: Ef þu lifer at omilldum munódum þa muntu liggia under eilyfum
hruna. — “Si enim pie et caste vixeris, sine fine gaudebis; si vero impie et
luxuriose, æternis incendiis subjacebis” (1143:78).
Fyrer hui lifer þu ej ad munód þine. — “Cur te in voluptate tua modo non
dilatas?” (1143:77).
Litil er stund munodlifis, enn fyre þad tyner margur Eilijfu lijfe. — “0
quam parva est concubitus hora, qua perditur vita æterna.” (1143:79).
There is no reference accompanying the following quotation, hut
it is fairly certain that this too is from the same work. It is hy no
