The References to the Sources in SLR. There is no consistency
in the references to the sources of the quotations in SLR, and the
same book is frequently referred to in several different ways. Often
only the name of the speaker is given, without the name of the book.
The list of sources at the beginning of the dictionary was compiled
by Worm or one of his helpers in Copenhagen by collecting all the
references from the body of the glossary, and in DG 55 the list ap-
pears in the order in which each name first occurs.71
As a result of these inconsistencies, several of the names in this list
refer to the same book. The following is a list of the chief variations,
and of the references which are not self-explanatory:
Grettis Saga is referred to as “Gretl(a)”, “Gret”, and “Gr:”.
Egils Saga as “Egl(u):”, “Eigil Skallagr:” and simply “E”.
Orkneyinga Saga as “Jarl(a) S:”, “J(J): S(ogu):”. The following also indi-
cate quotations from this saga: “Rognwalds Þatt.”, “R. Þ.”, “Rogv: (Orkn:)
J“R:J:”, “Rognualdur Brusa Son”, “Arnor (Jarla) Skald” (cf. “Arnon
Skald” in the list of sources, which must mean this poet), “Þor: Jall:”. In the
list of sources, besides “Jarla Saga”, “Orknu Saga” and “Rógvalds Þattur” are
mentioned.
“Olafs S:”, “01: S(agu)” refer indifferently to Óláfs Saga Helga and Óláfs
Saga Tryggvasonar, although sometimes the latter is specifically mentioned.
“Sigh: Skalld:”, “Þorarin Loftdunga”, “Þor: Loft:”, “Þorer H:”, “Kalfur i
01:S:”, “Ol.Har.S.” all refer to Óláfs Saga Helga. “Raud þ:”, “Raudv. þ:”
refer to Rauðúlfs Þáttr in the same saga (pp. 655—682).

tries containing inaterial from Brynjólfur Sveinsson’s Conjectanea (see above
pp. 43—48), which includes quotations from Örvar-Odds Saga and Sturlaugs
Saga. All the material both from Conjectanea and the Poetic Edda was added
to the glossary after DG 55-was made (see above pp. 41—47 and 103—105). Víg-
lundar Saga is listed in DG 55, but the name was omitted from the list in SLR.
