Summary of a lecture of country roads in Iceland
given in tlie Association of Engineers in Reykjavík Jan. 19U*- 1915 by Jon Thorlaksson engineer.
The author gives a surnmary of the develop-
ment of legislation with regard to roads in Iceland
from Jónsbók (1281) down to our times. The pro-
visions of the Law-code named Jónsbók remained
in force ti 11 1861. It provided for horse-paths
through the rural districts to be maintained by the
farmers by means of statute labour. Roads in the
modern sense were unknown till after 1875, when
the country obtained its constitution and tbe rigbt
