Þegar athugaðar eru flestar niðurstöður
rannsókna á félags- og efnahagsáhrifum (25),
fjölskyldustærð (16, 25, 28) og fæðingarröð í
stórum fjölskyldum (25) á meðalaldur við
upphaf fyrstu tíða, vaknar spurningin hvort
pessar niðurstöður séu ekki áhrif frá minni
fjölskyldustærð eða betri næringu og bættum
pjóðfélagsaðstæðum almennt síðustu áratugi.
Ef petta eru ástæðurnar fyrir peirri til-
hneigingu, til lækkaðs aldurs við fyrstu tíðir,
sem gætt hefur víða um heim, hefur sú
tillhneiging brátt runnið sitt skeið á enda á
íslandi, par sem lifnaðarhættir hafa batnað á
svipaðan hátt og í Noregi.
Þar sem engar fyrri upplýsingar hafa legið
fyrir um meðalaldur við upphaf fyrstu tíða á
íslandi, pá munu pessar upplýsingar skapa
grundvöll til samanburðar við síðari rannsókn-
ir. Jafnframt munu pær verða pýðingarmikil
stoð fyrir lækna, tannlækna og aðra er fást við
eftirlit með proska og heilbrigði barna.

SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mean
age at menarche in lcelandic girls and compare it
with results from other Scandinavian populations as
well as in other ethnic groups. The study was
performed during the school year 1972-1973 on a
cross-sectional sample of 682 girls (aged 8.5 to over
17 years), constituting 9,5% of the girls from the
third to eleventh grade in all the primary and
secondary schools of Reykjavik. The mean age at
menarche in lceland, elicited by the status quo
method, proved to be 13.06 ±0.10 years (S.D. 1.17
years). According to the information given by the
girls (recall method), the earliest time of menstruati-
on was 9.83 years and the latest 15.17 years, at which
age all but one of the girls were menstruating.
