of which showed a difference. This was the thin
layer on the cartilage surface which stained like
fibrine and which appeared less often in the
Osmic acid group. The researcher carrying out
the histological study considered that no differ-
ences were found which would speak for the
detrimental effects of Osmic acid.
The follow-up study of Martio et al. of patients
with juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis who had
received Osmic acid also failed to reveal any
■detrimental effects caused by Osmic acid. In
this study there were 129 patients 2-15 years of
age. Ali in all Osmic acid treatment was given
249 times to 190 knees. The average clinical
follow-up period was four years. No disturbances
in growth, in cartilage or bone, which could be
considered to be caused by Osmic acid were found.
On the basis of this and previous studies, Osmic
acid is a good alternative to a synovectomy by
radiation or surgerj'. The therapeutic result is
not always satisfactory, but the advantages of
Osmic acld are its facility and few side effects.
