bacteria. In the experiment with Proteus
mirabilis it was possible to remove much of 3.
the B12 by adding either EDTA in a final con-
centration of 0.25 M or LBP to the bacteria.
This effect was demonstrable even 1 h. after 4.
the addition of B12 in this particular experiment.
In experiments with E. coli and klebsiella it 5.
was possible to remove B12 by adding LBP or
EDTA within 1 min., but this could not be done 6.
after 1 h. Whenever EDTA was able to remove 7.
pre-added B12 from the bacteria, BI2 could also
be removed by LBP.
The present results, whieh are preliminary,
confirm the idea that LBP might efficiently 8.
compete with Bi^-uptaking bacteria for B12 in
the medium. Thus, LBP could inhibit a 9.
presumptive synergism between Bi^-producing
and Bi2-uptaking microorganisms in the intes- 10.
tinal Qora. Experiments are in progress to
reinforce this proposed mechanism by oral 11.
administration of LBP to patients with disturbed
intestinal fiora. 12.
