LYMPHOCYTE POPULATIONS
AND LYMPHOCYTE FUNCTIONAL
STUDIES IN RHEUMATOED
ARTHRITIS AND JUVENILE
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS
A review of several studies will be given
comprising lymphocyte populations in peripheral
blood, synovial fluid and synovial membrane from
patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and
juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) as weU as in
peripheral blood from adequate healthy eontrols.
in both RA & JRA patients. T-lymphocytes from
synovial membrane was found to be functionally
viable. In vivo, secondary delayed hypersensi-
tivity reactivity was significantly reduced in
patients with JRA compared with healthy controls.
Some patients (especially with RA) had low PHA-

Primary humoral antibody response in patients
with JRA was found to be normal whereas the
secondary antibody response was significantly
higher in such patients than in healthy controls.
T-lymphocyte function estimated by transforma-
tion reactivity in vitro was found to be normal
induced lymphocyte mediated cytotoxicity compared
with other arthritis patients and healthy controls.
Normal K-ceU function in both RA and JRA
patients was found by antibody mediated lymphocyte
cytotoxicity assays.
