FIG. 2 FREKVENS = 70 KHz IMPULSVARIGHED = 100 MIKROSEKUNDER GENTAGELSESFREKVENSEN 100 Hz AMPLITUDE>6 MAMP. (VARIATION 8-í)5). SPÆHDINGSFORSKEL KONSTAHT 9 VOLT. in the bax. Two days later the procedure was repeated with the two groups reversed. The stimulation was given for 60 minutes on the right vvrist through a 12 cm^ copper folio electrode in high frequency current with rectan- gular electrical impulse. Further technical specifications are provided on fig. 2. (Frequency 70 KHZ. , impulse duration = 100 microseconds, repetition rate = 100 hertz. Amplitude > 6 mamp., (variation 8-45) the voltage being kept constant at 9 volts). The patients were placed in a horizontal position with the generator in a box next to them. Pain was measured a.m. Huskisson with a non-parametric scale, before and after stimula- tion/placebo for right as well for left wrist, eight measurements in all. For both hands were in the same way measured coordinating ability on Perdue Pegboard, grip strength with a mercury manometer, and supination strength with a mechanical set-up. All the parameters were measured for both hands so that the unstimulated left hand couid be used as a control with regard to possible changes due to time, morning stiffness, previous medicine intake, room temperature and athmospheric pressure. Immediately upon completion of the investiga- tion the code was opened the impulse generators were tested and found in order. The patients' medicamental treatment was unchanged from two weeks before the trial to the end. R es ults: (Fig. 3). A signifieant statistical correlation was found between pain relief as registered a.m. Huskisson and electrostimulation P<0,05 on Pratts rangsum-test. No significant change in coordination, grip strength or supination strength could be shown. No side- effects or reverse effects were seen. Conclusion: Transcutaneous nerve stimulation has been used for pain relief for many years in physical medicine, and since the introduction of Gate control theory in 1965, there has been an increased interest in it. The apparatus we used gave an electric current that could not be felt. In the chosen group of patients characterized by chronic pain, we found significant pain relief after TNS., but no change in the other chosen parameters.
