Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1963 -Sept. 1964
The Icelandic coasts were free of drift ice
throughout the period. In January, however,
some loose drift ice and isolated strips were
observed at the northwestern fishing banks.
The winter months 1963/64 were generally
mild ancl favourable, while the summer was
cool.
Below are quoted the monthly normals (1931
—1960) and the monthly means for Cape Horn
and Stykkishómlur.

No drift ice sighted in Icelandic waters.
8/n The Coastal Guard reported two ice
blocks at 6444/2600 or 50 miles W of Snæfells-
nes, a most unusual position of sea ice.
DESEMBER 1963
The distance of the limits of drift ice at the
end of the month from Cape Straumnes was
about 50 miles.
31/i2 Pack ice edge was extending 6730/2200
to 6700/2400 thence as an irregular line to
6415/3600.
JANUARY 1964
The average distance of the ice limits off
Cape Straumnes was ab. 45 miles with tiearest
approach of 13 miles.
3/i Pack ice edge follows a line through the
coordinates: 7223/1600 to 6913/1820 to 6858/
1927 to 6818/1947 to 6758/2100 to 6758/2216

6636/2717 to 6621/2735.
Drift ice extends approx. 10—20 miles from
the pack ice except no drift ice between 6740
and 6630.
s/i Pack ice edge 7000/1600 to 6900/1635 to
6816/1900 to 6800/2100 to 6724/2124 to 6712/
2300 to 6700/2400.
17/i Boundary of pack ice brash and block
observed 7150/0730 to 7030/1400 to 6830/1620
to 6630/2300. Width of block field unknown.
17/i M/s Kaldbakur 2315: An ice strip ob-
served 3 miles north of position 6642/2106,
extending towards east.
18/i The Coastal Guard reports: The main
ice edge 34 miles N of Cape Kögur (by Straum-
nes) with a strip extending south and ending
at 13 miles off Cape Kögur. The ice edge was
further 34 miles N and NE of Cape Horn with
a strip going SE-wards to a point 25 miles NE
of Cape Geirólfsgnúpur.
25/i A ship report 0800: The ice edge sight-
ed one mile NE of position 6648/2100, ex-
tending SE to NW.
25/i m/b Strákur 1110: A two miles broad
ice strip of brash and block extending from
SE to NW observed from position 6629/2000.
