FEBRUARY 1964 The distance of he main ice edge frorri Cape Straumnes was about 75 niiles with nearest ap- proach of 60 miles. 17/2 Representative points of ice edge: 6510/ 3300 to 6535/3200 to 6600/3015 to 6700/2900 to 6730/2700 to 6830/1800 to 6830/1300 to 6900/1200 to 7000/1000 to 7100/0800. 2112 Ice edge off the Greenland coasts: 6200/ 4130 to 6300/4050 to 6330/4010 to 6422/3950 to 6430/3755 to 6505/3740 to 6452/3645 to 6510/3530 to 6528/3420 to 6446/3345 to 6534/ 3238 to 6548/2942 to 6645/2900. 2-t/2 Ice edge 6650/2600 to 6753/2130 to 6750/2120 to 6803/1930 to 6828/183.5 to 6828/ 1255 to 6839/1225 to 6844/1124 to 7000/1333 to 7038/1333 to 7120/1200. Note the short and broad ice tongue extending SE between Jan Mayen and Iceland. MARCH 1964 No ice was sightecl from he coasts or by ’ships in Icelanclic waters. On tlie 12th, however, a close ice edge (conc. 7/sj toas obserued 45 miles off Cape Straumnes. 12/s The ice edge was observed at 6710/2535 to 6610/2510 to 6700/2440 to 6710/2340 to 6718/2340 to 6718/2322 to 6730/2300 to 6740/ 2230. APRIL 1964 No ice was sighted from the coast or by ships in Icelandic waters. No ice reports available. 10/4 An Icelandic airplane reported two ice- bergs at the rather unusual position 12 miles south of 6103/3700. MAY 1964 On May 21st a ship reported close drift ice about 40 mi.les NW of Cape Straumnes at JÖKULL 1964 position 6648/2448. The ice eclge was extend- ing from E to W as far as sighted. No other reports available. JUNE 1964 The average distance of he ice edge from Cape Straumnes was about 45 miles with near- est approach of 25 miles. 5/e—7/o The ice edge was running from 6654/2318 to 6700/2320 to 6717/2240 to 6705/ 2200 to 6718/2106 to 6812/2112. Scattered blocks were within this limits at 6655/2200 and 6640/2200 or 18 miles NNE of Cape Horn. (Observed by Coastal Guard Ship Ægir). 12/q The Coastal Guard Plane TF-SIF: The ice edge observecl at 6659/2611 to 6658/2514 to 6716/2425 to 6718/2419 to 6726/2354 to 6742/2313 to 6743/2346 to 6812/2148. 29/ö Ægir reports position of ice edge from 6654/2312 to 6700/2154 thence in direction 60° true. |°/o Ægir 0900: A strip of ice extending frorn 6657/2155 to 6629/2145 to 6625/2121. JULY 1964 The ice edge was not far from the NW-ern promontories of Iceland. The average distance frorn Cape Straumnes was about 40 miles with nearest approach of 22 miles. Scattered brash and blocks were drifting in the coastal waters off Cape Horn during tlie first half of the month. The main position of the ice edge according to several reports was from 6640/2500 to 6700/ 2330 to 6700/2200 to 6640/2000, thence NE- wards to Kolbeinsey. 4/t m/s Skjaldbreið 1650: Consiclerable drift ice on the sailing route 14 miles NE of Geir- ólfsgnúpur. 2/i Coastal Guard Ice-flight: Ice boundary from about 6700/2500 to 6650/2300 to 6655/ 2220 to 6630/2125 to 6700/2100 thence in N- NW-erly direction. About 11 miles E of Cape North begins a concentration of drift ice that covers about 60 square miles. Its distance from the coast is from 6—8 miles. 2/t—11 /7 Scattered drift ice was reported dayly on the sailing route 10—20 miles E of Cape Horn but seems to have drifted west- 101
