sion of the saga. AJ also has one or two details which are not
found in the complete version of the saga; these he must have
obtained from Vatnshyrna, which must have contained in these
particulars a variant account, see notes to II io412>18.

33. Gottskdlks anndll. These annals formed AJ’s chief source
for the historical material in Brevis comm. After Flateyjarbåk
came into his hånds, he used the Flateyjarannåll a good deal (see
above under no. 1), but notices from Gottskålksannåll continue
to appear in all his historical works (last in Specimen, III
34221-24). Gottskålksannåll is AJ’s chief chronological source for
the period after the conclusion of Flateyjarannåll (A.D. 1394),
used especially, in works other than Brevis comm., in Crymogæa
II 19125ff. Gottskålksannåll (ed. G. Storm in Islandske Annaler
indtil 1578, 1888, pp. 299—378), which is still preserved in the
author’s autograph (Stockh. Perg. 8:0 no. 5), reaches the year
1578, and was written by the parson, Gottskålk Jonsson, of
Glaumbær in SkagafjorSur (1524—90)1; the latest entries were
written by his son. AJ’s source was either the author’s own copy
or a copy made directly from it; Gottskålk’s autograph copy
was, we know, used several times at Holar before the middle of
the seventeenth century (see Isl. Annaler, xxvi-xxvn). Up to
1394 Gottskålk based his work on an older series of annals,
now lost (see 1. c. xxvm-xxxii). A copy of this older compila-
tion was later sent by AJ to Ole Worm, at least before 1641 (see
1. c. xxxi, and Bibi. Arnam. VII 35725 and note). AJ did not
however make use of this older work himself, at least not in
Brevis comm. (see note to I 4 5 32), and he probably always con-
fined himself to Gottskålksannåll.
34. Grænlandsannall. This work, based on Hauksbok and
other sources, was written by AJ’s contemporary, Bjorn Jonsson
å SkarSså, and is preserved in the author’s autograph copy in
AM 115 8vo. AJ used the work in Specimen, see III 34036,
