INTRODUCTION
AJ reproduces some material which is not to be found in the pre-
served version of the saga. Jon Helgason has suggested (Fest-
skrift til Falk, 1927, p. 225) that AJ had a fuller version than
we now possess, and this seems the most probable explanation.
43. Hdlfs saga. A brief passage in Crymogæa (II 1536 -) is
derived from this saga, see note to II 1535 21. Nothing can be
concluded as to AJ’s immediate source.
44. HeiSreks saga. AJ used a manuscript of this saga in Rer.
Dan. fragm., see I 34017-18, 35015~35i25> 3522-3532G, 46622-
46724, 47216-20, 4731—47420, and notes. Jon Helgason (Festskrift
til Falk, 1927, p. 217 ff.) has demonstrated that AJ’s source
must have been a now lost manuscript of the U-redaction, pos-
sibly the original of that copy which is now the chief manuscript
extant containing this version (R:7i5 in the University Library,
Uppsala).
45. Ragnars saga lodbrokar. AJ used this text, together with
Skjpldunga saga, in the section in Rer. Dan. fragm., I 4641—46619,
see notes ad loc. AJ’s source contained the same redaction of the
saga as is found in Ny kgl. sml. 1824 b 4to, and possibly it was
this manuscript which he used, see note to I 46617.
46. Samsons saga fagra. In Gronlandia (II 2332~5) there is a
brief passage taken from this saga. AJ’s version is not exact
enough to allow any conclusion as to his source, see note ad loc.
47. Qrvar-Odds saga. One or two very short extracts from this
saga are given in Rer. Dan. fragm., see I 35C0—35214 and notes.
No conclusion as to AJ’s manuscript source is possible.
V. Legal texts.
48. Grågås. In Crymogæa AJ gives passages of some consider-
able length from Grågås and he frequently quotes directly from
this law-book, see II 60-87 and notes. The quotations agree with
the text of StaSarhålsbåk, although AJ’s immediate source was
not this codex itself, but a copy of it written in the last half of
the sixteenth century and now preserved in Stockh. Papp. 4to no.
661. On a piece of paper stuck inside the front of the book has
