INTRODUCTION
edly Papp. 4to no. 66, see preceding section; further confirma-
tion of this is given by the faet that in the margin of 66, against
the first and last of the three sections mentioned above, there has
been placed NB and a stroke made. And it may have been the
note in 66, fol. 2i6v (see above), which misled AJ into believ-
ing that the articles on the following leaves in that manuscript
belonged to the laws of the Commonwealth; the note gave, at
least, no indication that these articles were derived from JårnsiSa.
50. Landslgg Magnusar Hdkonarsonar. A notice in Crymo-
gæa and another in Specimen come from this legal code, see II
7724 and III 297^8; in the latter instance, the statute is said to
stand “in vetustissimo jure Norvegiæ”. It is not possible to decide
which manuscript was used by AJ.
Lastly, it may be noted here that AJ’s references to the Ice-
landic law-book, Jånsbok, are almost certainly references to one
of the printed editions (1578 onwards). In this connection, the
expression codex legum, which he uses when speaking of his
source, is of no significance (cf. I 69®, 753 and notes). There is,
at any rate, no sufficient reason for counting Jånsbok amongst
AJ’s manuscript sources.
VI. Various works.
5/. Srtorra-Edda. The prologue of Snorra-Edda was used by
AJ in Supplementum (possibly also in Rer. Dan. fragm.), see
I 14322, I4414-i4812, i 7 i1-8, 33311-19 and notes. In Crymogæa,
reference is made to the First and Third Grammatical Treatises
in Cod. Wormianus, see II 2h]29—2811 and notes. As is shown by
the last-cited passage and by the notes to I 14322 and I4414-24,
only Cod. Worm. (AM 242 fol.) can have been his source. Since
AJ is known to have owned this manuscript at a later date (see
introduction to the edition of Cod. Worm., 1924, and Bibi.
Arnam. VII io3 and note; cf. above, pp. 77—8), before sending
it to Ole Worm in 1628, it is most likely that it had already come
into his possession when he wrote Supplementum.
52. IJlja. Verse 4 of this poem is quoted in Crymogæa (II
295-12). As remarked in the note to this passage, AJ’s text differs
from that of the most important manuscripts and from that of
