CHAPTER IV

allowed himself to be influenced by Saxo if the account there did
not differ overmuch from his own original text. The agreement
with the other redactions would also seem to imply that the bear-
ing of the hot iron was the original tradition.
4. J 1089. The heathen temple in Gautland plundered by Hå-
kon jarl was “Jovi sacratum” = “helgat Por” OT(A) 531-2.
Possibly this also stood in the lacuna in 291, 34"*, even though it
is lacking in F and Fms. I.
5. J 1 1 233-34. King Sveinn leaves Pålnatåki “nullis . . . ornatus
honorariis” = “me8 øngum gjpfum” F 15821, H 10, 510, 127.
In 291, 4528-4610, a passage is here inserted, describing how
Fjplnir persuaded the king to accept Pålnatoki’s gifts; this is cer-
tainly secondary.
6. J 12119. Véseti equips four ships = F 16923, 510, 3523; but
three ships in 291, 7023, H 17. The number of the crew (2 ‘hun-
dreds’ = 240) suits four ships better (that J assigns fifty men
to each ship is undoubtedly due to AJ’s misunderstanding of
“hundraS” as 100; cf. below under no. 57).
7. J 12510-11. Sigvaldi orders that King Sveinn may be allowed
to board the ship lying nearest land with thirty followers, the next
ship with twenty and his own with only ten. The same is found in
6T(A) in3-5, 510, 4831—495, Fms. I 158. The last article of his
command is however lacking in 291, F, H. This omission is the
chief argument for the theory that these three manuscripts form
a common group, see Krijn 36-7 and Hempel 37, to whom
further reference may be made.
8. J 12517-18. The King bends down over Sigvaldi. “Sigval-
dus eum medium arreptum pertinacissimé tenuit”. Cf. OT(A)
jjjis-io “(-5^ Sigvaldi baSum hpndum um hann miSjan ok helt
honum fast”. 510, 4923~24, and Fms. I 159 have both something
similar, but in both texts some modification has been made.
There is a dif ferent version, on the other hånd, in 291, F, H:
291, 8820—22 : “tok Sigvaldi hendi annarri um herSar konunginum
en annarri undir hgnd honum ok er hann nu eigi allmeginlauss”
(from ‘ok’ onwards is lacking in H). This passage is also taken
by Hempel (38) as evidence of the existence of a group com-
posed of 291, F, H.
9. J 1301. Håkon jarl feasts with a hundred men. The same
