INTRODUCTION
against Vagn. The same man is also named as one of Vagn’s
opponents in Fsk. 9418. Otherwise he is not mentioned as one of
the leaders in the battie. Apart from Fsk. 102, Hkr. I 336 and
Fms. I 182 also tell of his death from the arrow shot by HåvarSr
hpggvandi, but here all redactions of Jvs. have GuSbrandr hviti
(or GuSbrandr år Dplum). As leader of the wing opposed to
Vagn, 291, F have Qgmundr hviti in place of Gizurr hviti, H has
Geirmundr hviti and 510 Erlendr Håkonarson.
44. J 13527. The Jomsvikings have stripped because of the
heat and fight “loricis solummodo corpus amicti” — “hgfSu engi
pnnur klæSi en herklæSi” 510, 8o18.
45. J 13614. Forkeil miSlangr strikes off “Booni. . partern nasi
primoresqve dentes cum mento”. In the other redactions only lips
and chin are mentioned. Hkr. I 33311-12 has “hjå . . um fivert
nefit ok i sundr nefbjqrgina”. Fms. I 178 and Fsk. 9814 have
“ennit” in place of “nefit”. In these last three texts the name is
Forsteinn miSlangr.
46. J 13623-32. Vagn first throws his spear at Sigvaldi and then
abuses him. The same is found in 510, 8610-24, where the con-
tumely includes a verse. The sequence is reversed in the other
redactions and in Fsk. (where the verse does not appear).
47. J 13824. One of the Jomsvikings says that he will stick his
knife into the ground (“cultellum terræ impingam”) if he feels
anything after he has been beheaded. Fsk. ioo6-7 has the same:
“man ek siSan stinga knifi i jprSina”, cf. Hkr. I 33411-12: “dålk
hefi ek i hendi, ok mun ek stinga i jprSina” (= Fms. I 180). The
other redactions of Jvs. have “visa fram”.
48. J I3 929-30. Vagn returns home “magnificentissimis ab
Erico donatus muneribus”. Similar phrases in 510, 99®“7, and
Fsk. 10311 (Eirikr gives him three warships).
It may be noted also that J has always the form Burisleifus =
Burizleifr in 510, H, OT(A) and Fsk. The other redactions of
Jvs. have Burizlåfr. To this point however no great significance
can be attached.
From the above list it will be seen that J agrees with Fsk. alone
in nos. 33, 43, 47, with both Fsk. and 510 (in whole or in part)
in nos. 34, 37, 39, 41, 48, with Fsk. and Hkr. in nos. 37, (39),
40, 42, and finally with Hkr. alone in no. 45. There remain those
