NOTES
j^i-29 The longitude and latitude readings are taken from the
following works: L. i : on his map of the world (pi. i) Munster
places Iceland between ca. 68°-65° N and 260—30° E (only the
io° marks are given on the map). In the text (p. 847) the longi-
tude and latitude of Iceland are not given.—L. 2 : G. Mercator’s
map from 1554 or 1569 (see Nørlund, Islands Kortlægning, pi.
13 and 18).—L. 3-7: Gemma Frisius, p. 147.—L. 8-22: Zieg-
ler, fol. 93V (with the variants: for Chos. 1. 10 Z. has Choas and
for long. 22.46 he has 22.40; 1. 18 Hekelsol Z.; 1. 19 AJ’s lat.
reading is corrected from Z.).—L. 23-4: Erasmus Reinholdus
Salueldensis, Primus liber tabularum directionum, 1554, fol.
23ir.—L. 25-6: Johannes Myritius, Opusculum geographicum
. . Ingolstadii 1590, p. 22.—L. 27-9: Michael Neander, Orbis
terræ divisio compendiaria, Lipsiæ 1586, fol. 33V.
147 ternis . . navigationibus: From this it follows that AJ must
have travelled via Hamburg at least twice in his student-period
(from and to Iceland?), if he is including his journey in 1592.
1411-15 Cf. Landnåmabåk (1900) p. 129; the distance to Nor-
way given there dif fers from AJ’s; it reads seven days (dægr),
as also in AlfroeSi islenzk I 44. The inaccuracy may however be
due to AJ himself.
1417- w jn _ <Fes: From Munster, p. 847.
1418 Vadianus: Joachimus Vadianus (= J. von Watt), Epi-
tome topographica totius orbis, Antuerpi^ 1535, fol. 212V—2i3r.
1418- 22 jn _ noctibus: Does not read thus in Vadianus,
though the sense is more or less the same. Perhaps AJ used a
different edition.
1428 65.44: On the correction, see p. 151 above. When Bishop
GuSbrandur made this observation is not known (cf. Islandica
XVII 17), but it is correct.
152 Nornen — adhæret: From Munster, p. 847. Goes back to
Krantz (who had it from Adam of Bremen).
153-5 A latere - tellus: From Saxo (praef. p. 7).
I56-6 Hæc — celebrata: From Ziegler, fol. 93r (derived from
Saxo) ; cf. Olaus Magnus, Carta marina: “insolitis miraculis pre-
dicandam”.
159 Naddocus: See above, Introduction, pp. 95-6. The fol-
lowing facts are taken from Landnåmabok.
