NOTES
Hrolfs saga kraka the family relationships are presented dif-
ferently, see F. Jonsson’s edition (1904), pp. IX-XI; Olrik, Dan-
marks heltedigtning I 169-79; B. K. Forolfsson, Rimur fyrir
1600 (Safn FræSafélagsins IX, 1934)) pp. 346—51. Bjarka nmur
are certainly dependent on Skjqld., possibly through an inter-
mediate link consisting of a prose story about Hrolfr kraki (see
B. K. Forolfsson, 1. c. 349—50). A similar conclusion had already
been reached by A. Olrik in his unpublished study of Bjarka
rlmur (Studier over de islandske Skjoldungsagn) in the Dansk
Folkemindesamling.—AJ has in this section however preserved
various points which are not included in the rlmur; at the same
time, he also appears to have abridged and omitted some of the
material. Thus he does not mention the ring Svlagrlss, nor how
Hrærekr flung it in the sea and how his brother, Agnarr, after-
wards dived for it. And he has nothing on the early years of
Flelgi and Hroarr beyond the note that they were kept hidden
“in insula qvadam Scaniæ”.
34319-34425 See Hkr. I 54—55, which as far as it goes agrees
with AJ, but omits several things which he gives. Cf. Hrolfs saga
kraka, pp. 17-23, 28-30, where the events are however in a com-
pletely dif ferent sequence (see the edition’s introduction, pp. XI—
XIII). The agreement between Yngl. and AJ is a guarantee that
he is here reproducing Skjqld.’s account, while Hrolfs saga must
represent another tradition. Over and above AJ’s account Snorri
has the story that ASils abducted Yrsa on a piratical expedition,
without knowing that she was Alof’s daughter. This was prob-
ably omitted by AJ, cf. Introduction, p. 112 above.
34421 post triennium: “er Hrolfr var jmévetr” Hkr. I 5514;
AJ’s statement (I 34425) that Helgi feil 5 years later and that
Hrolfr was then 8 years old (= “viii vetra” Hkr. I 5519) agrees
with this.
34428-34919 The closest parallels to this are in Sn.-Edda
(1931), pp. 139-42; Hkr. I 56; Bjarka rlmur I 7-19, V 35-VI
34, VII 25-VIII 28. All these versions must go back to Skjqld.
The version in Hrolfs saga kraka is to a large extent discrepant
(cf. the edition’s introduction). See also Olrik, Aarb. 1894, pp.
143, 155, 159-61; cf. the Introduction, p. 112 above.
