in the note to I 35316~23, that AJ, whilst working on Rerum Dan.
fragm., was not aware of the existence of the genealogies in
Flat. Neither are there any grounds for believing that AJ’s text
of Skjgld. had the same mistake as Sggubrot, since the correct
genealogy in Flat. must after all ultimately have been derived
from Skjald, also. It follows therefore that it is impossible to
use this passage, as Olrik did, to prove that AJ here had “the
revised text” of Skjgld.
46122—46 2 36 This passage on elves in general is from AJ’s own
pen; it rests on popular Icelandic belief. Cf. Einar Ol. Sveinsson,
Um islenzkar jqoSsogur, 1940, pp. 78—9, 162, where references
will be found to parallels to the legends given by AJ.—AJ’s ex-
pressions, especially 46125 and 46231-32, show clearly enough that
he shared his countrymen’s unshakable belief in elves, which, for
that matter, was not confined to Iceland in this period.
4611-12 The tale of Vattavinur appears here for the first time
in Icelandic sources, see Einar Ol. Sveinsson, 1. c., to which may
be added a notice in Dl. DaviSsson, Islenzkar gåtur, skemtanir,
etc. IV 233.
4621 orientali: Here a number is evidently lacking: “ex . . .”,
which has without question dropped out in our manuscript.
462° vater: Probably corrupt for vetter, but AJ seems to have
mixed up the words vettir (= mittens) and vaSir (= fishing-
lines).
4631-5 Corresponds to Sggubrot 2 510~30, at which point Sggu-
brot’s text abruptly ends. AJ’s text of Skjgld. clearly continued
without interruption.
4636-83 acCount of SigurSr hringr’s wooing of Ålfsol, his
fight with her brothers and the death of them all, including
Ålf sål, is not preserved elsewhere. It is undoubtedly from Skjgld.
4641~46619 The account of Ragnarr loSbrok is based, as Olrik
has shown (Aarb. 1894, pp. 147-9), partly on Skjgld. and
partly on a Ragnars saga loSbråkar, see the following notes.
A version related to Skjgld.’s is in the Påttr af Ragnarssonum
in Hauksbåk (pp. 458-67), which can be used to some extent
to check AJ’s text. It is questionable, however, whether Olrik’s
views on the Påttr af Ragnarssonum rest on sound enough
foundations; it is at any rate clear that there is better agreement
