NOTES
proof, since the original impression was certainly not sold out
when H. Carstens took over the stock, and he could have in-
cluded these leaves in copies with the original title-page. It may
also be noted that these leaves do not appear in all the extant
copies of the 1610-edition either. The setting is the same in all
known examples of the leaves.
The text and spelling of the original edition are exactly re-
tained in the present edition, but with the same modifications as
are specified above in the introductory remarks on Brevis com-
mentarius (p. 153). Attention should however be paid to the fol-
lowing further points:
1) For typographical reasons the 9 of the original edition has
been replaced by æ. The letter occurs most often in the ending -9
(in about half the occurrences the ending is -i?), e.g. quæ 6727,
14914, 18423, suæ 998, 20731, 21729, vestræ 12138, 18517, Norvegiæ
10320, 10717, 18212, Islandiæ 12031, 13014, 155®, 18125, 18510, Ir-
landiæ 11923; other words occur only once with the spelling -£.
There is also a fair number of examples of the form in the prefix
præ-, e.g. prædictum 959, 2195, præcipuum 98”, præfectus 1583
etc. Finally, there are a few examples of a different kind, e.g.
ædium 11710, corycæis 1221, cædibus 13610, Mæcolfus 14315, in-
cæstuosis 2053.—All these words however are normally written
with æ and the spelling with 9 is only an orthographic variant.
2) AJ’s corrections of obvious printing errors, both in the list
of errata and in the dedication-copy mentioned above, have been
introduced into the text without comment; only where AJ’s cor-
rections in the dedication-copy consist of additions or alterations
is this noted in the footnotes to the text. A list of AJ’s corrections
in the dedication-copy is given below; those of them which are
also found in the printed list of errata are marked with an
asterisk; the (very few) corrections which are in the printed list
but not in the dedication-copy are quoted with the addition of
(-=- AJ). It will be noted that AJ has generally made no correc-
tions in the Icelandic quotations; against most of them in the
dedication-copy he indicates that they can be omitted (i.e. in a
new edition). As his words reveal II 2 2 5 35-37, he had thought of
publishing a separate list of corrections for the use of his Ice-
landic readers, and he has expressed the same idea on the copy
