probably had, however, from Crymogæa, since it is not to be
found in any other Hungrvaka-manuscript. AJ’s reading (which
is wrong) must in some way or other be connected with the so-
called fsleifs |)åttr (see Byskupa spgur I 2212), where Flat. has
“j Vide dal til Asgeirs år”, while the other principal manuscript,
AM 75 e fol., has “j fnioska dal” and no farm-name at all.
It cannot be determined whether AJ found the farm-name Hals
in Fnjåskadalur in a manuscript of Isleifs J)åttr or in his manu-
script of Hungrvaka, but it is tolerably certain that the reading
had its ultimate origin in Isleifs joåttr, cf. Jon Helgason’s com-
ments on this, Byskupa s. I 16.

The expression ‘Epistolas et Amores Ovidii’, II 9530, shows that
AJ used either the redaction of the saga called A in the edition
or the expanded version called C. In these two versions we find
Ovidius epistolarum (thus C, epistorum A; Biskupa sogur I
165), while the B-version (ibid. I 238) has Ovidius de arte. See
above, Introduction, ch. III no. 36.
9 5 20-23 Saxa - fecit: This point does not come from Jåns saga
helga and is scarcely correct. Other sources attribute the finding
of the red sandstone and its use for repairing the church to
Bishop AuSun Porbergsson (1313—22; see Biskupa sogur I 830
and 890, cf. Dipi. Isl. III 610). Probably AJ’s remark has
sprung from a tradition at Hålar.

knows that Bishop Porlåkr studied in Paris, but on the other
hånd he adds the incorrect statement that Porlåkr forbade priests
to marry, a rule that was not introduced until the Kristinréttr of
1275. The latter might however be due to AJ’s misinterpretation
