bishops. Then in chs. V—VIII we are given epitomes of Icelandic
sagas about people who had lived in Greenland. In chs. IX-X we
have an account of the discovery of VInland (from Flateyjar-
båk), and finally in ch. XI a short survey of the descendants of
Porfinnr karlsefni. AJ ends his work by addressing to the Danish
king his hopes that he may succeed in re-establishing the connec-
tion with Greenland, both in order to link it to the Danish crown
and to impart to its inhabitants the true religion.
2. Sources. In Monum. typogr. Isl. VI 16-31 J6n Helgason
has given a detailed consideration of the sources used by AJ in
Gronlandia, and in ch. III of the Introduction above we have
listed the individual works used by him. Here therefore a very
brief survey will suffice, with references to the numbers of the
works in ch. III.
One of AJ’s chief sources is Flateyjarbok (ch. III no. 1). In
this codex he used FostbræSra saga (II 2464-25216; cf. ch. III
no. 21), Einars J)åttr Sokkasonar (II 23619-21, 24225-30, 25914-29),
Grænlendinga |)åttr (II 2603—2665), Hakonar saga Håkonar-
sonar (II 24030—24118; cf. ch. III no. 7), Flateyjarannåll (to-
gether with Gottskålksannall, II 24230-24328), a notice from
Olåfs saga ens helga (II 24020-27). AJ also used Olåfs saga
Tryggvasonar (AM 53 fol., see ch. III no. 3), see II 234®,
23519, 23614-18, 24121—2424 and notes.
In Vatnshyrna (see ch. III no. 16) AJ used BårSar saga (ch.
III no. 17), see II 23831-24010, Floamanna saga (ch. III no.
20), see II 24418-24532, and Kroka-Refs saga (ch. III no. 27),
see II 23619-21, 25223-25912. AJ also used Landnåmabok (ch. III
no. 28), see II 22918, 23319-23719.
AJ used Gottskålksannall (ch. III no. 33) together with Flat-
eyjarannall II 24230—24328 and on its own 2634 Pals saga biskups
(ch. III no. 39) was used for the passage II 24314-19; similarly a
single point was taken from Samsons saga fagra (ch. III no. 46)
II 2332-5.
Of older writings on the geography of Greenland are used
Konungs skuggsjå (ch. III no. 55) II 234 18_25, 2 3 5 22-29, 23b1-5,
the so-called “Gripla” (ch. III no. 59) II 230—31, 2438-2 (see
notes), and lists of the fjords and churches in Greenland (ch. III
nos. 60—61) II 23723—23813, 2424-24.
