year of the settlement. The latter date is found in most of the
annals (but only after correction in Flateyjarannåll), whilst
amongst other sources Landnåmabok and Olafs saga Tryggva-

1910, p. 264.
234® Midjokul — Miklajokul: Landnåmabok merely says:
“hann kom utan at MiSjpkli”; in Olåfs saga Tryggvasonar it
reads: “hann . . . kom utan at jsar sem hann kallaSi Miklajgkul”
(thus AM 53 and 54 fol.; cf. Eiriks saga rauSa, 1891, p. 50;
Fms. II 214). Here it is obvious that AJ used both Landnåma-
bok and AM 53 fol. (cf. note to II 23519).

23519 Hafursfiord: Only AM 53 fol. has this form (see Fms.
II 214), while Landnåmabok and the other manuscripts of Olåfs
saga Tryggvasonar have HrafnsfjprS. As Jon Helgason has
pointed out, this is telling evidence of AJ’s use of AM 53 fol. of
Olåfs saga. Cf. Introduction, ch. III no. 3.

82—4. Part of the description of the walrus comes from Konungs
skuggsjå (edn. 1920, pp. 69-70), viz. on the length of the wal-
rus, the thickness of its hide and the strength of ropes made from
it. The length of the tusks (two ells) and the statement that the
walrus hangs on the rocks by them are not derived from any old
source, but possibly from oral tradition.—The remark that Ice-
landers presented walrus-tusks to Danish and Norwegian kings
depends on Einars f)åttr Sokkasonar (Flat. III 445) and Kroka-
Refs saga (p. 38).
