23713-19 These names of the settlers in Greenland are not given
in Olaf s saga Tryggvasonar in Fms. II. Most of them are found,
it is true, in Flat. (I 430), but Forkeli farserkr (Torcillus Erici
Ruffi . . nepos) occurs only in Landnåmabok. This shows that
Landn. was, as Jon Helgason has already observed, AJ’s prin-
cipal source.
23723—23813 The list of the fjords in Greenland is derived
from an ancient source which is preserved in part in a copy made
by Bjorn Jonsson of SkarSså (AM 115 8vo, fol. 2^r—v, printed
in Grønl. hist. Mindesm. III 226-8 and in Medd. om Grønland
XX, 1899, pp. 319-20; cf. also G. Storm in Aarb. 1887, p. 327).
Cf. Introduction, ch. III no. 60.—There is a number of dis-
crepancies between AJ and Bjorn’s copy, on which reference can
be made to Finnur Jonsson’s discussion in Medd. om Grønland
XX 273—8. We shall note only the following: Corresponding to
2383-4 Norf. Eriksfiord Bjorn has “H-f. H.f. H-f. ur Dyrnesi”,
i.e. he was unable to read his original but thought three fjord-
names stood there. AJ’s first name is written “N°f” in A, which
possibly signifies that AJ could not read the word either, and the
spelling Norf. in BC is only a scribal version of the abbreviation.
The name we should most expect to find (judging by Ivar
BarSarson’s description of Greenland) is KambstaSafjgrSr, see
Finnur Jånsson, op. cit. pp. 282—3. There is otherwise no evi-
dence to support the name NorSfjprSr, which Finnur Jonsson,
not understanding clearly the relationship between the Gron-
landia-manuscripts he used, tries to justify.—238° Makleiksf. :
Utibliks f. Bjorn Jonsson, which is possibly the more correct
name. Finnur Jonsson assum es that both names are corrupt,
but one can cite the Icelandic farm-name GtibliksstaSir.—2387
Brandaf. is certainly a misreading for Stranda- (thus Bjorn).—
2382 Ekrukollufiord (thus C, Ebre- A, E. . . B) : Corresponding
to this Bjorn has: “£)å heitir eirn kollu f.” AJ’s Ekru-, Ebre- is
possibly a misreading of “eirn”, as Finnur Jonsson suggests (op.
cit. p. 277).—238” Austkongsfiord is missing entirely in Bjorn’s
list; he probably skipped over it in copying. On the name, cf.
Finnur Jånsson, op. cit. pp. 277 and 296, and Det gamle Grøn-
lands beskrivelse af Ivar BarSarson, 1930, p. 63.
