NOTES
Settlement, but there can be no doubt that they stood in the com-
mon original.
23816-17 The number of farms in both settlements agrees with
Bjorn Jonsson’s copy.
23825 dægur: The normal meaning of the word is ‘half a day’
(12 hours), but from olden times onward it has also been used
in the sense of ‘day’ (24 hours), especially in such phrases as
‘dægrs sigling’. See Magnus Olsen in Maal og minne 1941, p. 48,
and the literature there cited.
23831-24010 From BårSar saga Snæfellsass, see edn. 1860, pp.
9-10, 13-14, 24-5. Vatnshyrna was certainly the source, see In-
troduction, ch. III no. 17.
2391 Anno 987.: In BårSar saga (p. 9) the event is said to
have occurred one year after Eirikr rauSi made his settlement in
Greenland.
23914-17 The text of the verse agrees with the Vatnshyrna-copy
AM 486 4to, see Den norsk-isl. skjaldedigtning, A II 449-50.
The two extra lines which are found in C and the Icelandic trans-
lation are not in Vatnshyrna, but agree with the paper manuscript
of BårSar saga, AM 165 g fol. (C’s Bwrfelley is a misreading
for Burfell og). They have thus been inserted in the common
original of C and the Icelandic translation.
23931 brachium et costam: In the saga (p. 14) it says that
Helga broke the suitor’s right arm and left leg.
2401-8 The verse agrees with the Vatnshyrna-copy, except for
the reading in 1. 3 : menja Eyre, evidently a misreading for menia
ryri, cf. Den norsk-isl. skjaldedigtning, A II 450.
24O0-12 Printed in Th. Torfæus, Gronlandia antiqva, pp.
114-5.
24010 ad annum ætatis 7: The Vatnshyrna-copy AM 486 4to
has viij, but other manuscripts have xij; this might suggest that
AJ read vij in Vatnshyrna, while an error has crept into AM
486 4to (see BårSar saga, p. 25).—As Jån Helgason has pointed
out (Monum. typogr. Isl. VI 20), it might be thought that AJ
had originally intended to tell more aboutGestr BårSarson, since,
according to BårSar saga (p. 40), he too went to Greenland.
Otherwise the mention of Gestr appears quite irrelevant in AJ’s
text.
