GRONLANDIA
355
257-8.—The only bishop of Greenland known to AJ after 1389
is Andreas (who in faet never visited his diocese) ; he issued a
couple of letters in Iceland in 1461, see Dipi. Isl. V 237—8, 239—
40. Only copies of them are now known, but AJ claims to have
seen the originals (according to Specimen, III 33 535, where he
says they were “eum sigillis”). The dates given by AJ agree with
those on the extant copies.

110.
24411 Ienkonsonus: Anthony Jenkinson (t 1611). Travelled
and lived in Russia and countries further to the east in the years
1557—72. He made amongst others a map of these lands which
was later used by other cartographers, such as Ortelius and Mer-
cator. See Early Voyages and Travels to Russia and Persia.
Anthony Jenkinson and other Englishmen, 1—2, London 1886
(Works issued by The Hackluyt Society 72-3). AJ did not use
Jenkinson’s own map, as can be seen, for example, from the faet
that the name of the divinity mentioned is there written Zlata
Baba. Cf. the text note.
24412 Reinoldus Mercator: Should be Rumoldus M., see Mer-
cator’s Atlas 1595 (edited by Rumoldus Mercator), pi. B (Eu-
ropa) and pi. XXVI. In both places the form is Zolotaja baba;
on pi. XXVI the neighbouring regions are called Obdora and
Ioughoria. Lougorianis in the A-text of Gronlandia is thus a
scribal error for lougorianis, and the reading of our text from
B (Long-) should not have been preferred.
244ls-24532 From Floamanna saga (see edn. 1932, pp. 33-
56). The source was Vatnshyrna.
24529-30 Stiakarhoffde (Stiaka- B) : In the Vatnshyrna-copies
the ship is called Stakan- or StakhpfSi (Floam. s. 561’15). AJ’s
form is probably the result of a misreading; a surname ‘stjakar-
hofSi’ is known from later Icelandic popular tradition (IRSA 6,
pp. cxxiii and 58).
2464-25216 From FåstbrceSra saga in Flat. (Flat. II 162-5,
199-225, 358), see notes to II 24631, 2472 and 24710-2481 (de-
monstrated by Jon Helgason, Monum. typogr. Isl. VI 24-5).
