professor from 1600, Krag’s successor as Historiographer, cf.
Introduction, p. 39 ff. See H. F. Rørdam in Kirkehist. Saml. III
R. 1 Bd. (1874—77), pp. 241-310.
5632 Thoma Finkio: Th. Fincke (1561-1656), professor from
1591. AJ kept up a connection with him all through his life, as
may be seen from AJ’s letters to Worm, see Bibi. Arnam. VII
(Index, s. v. Fincke).
57® David Chythræe: D. Chytræus (1530-1600), professor
in Rostock from 1551 and a famous writer on theological and
historical subjects; from an early period in his career he was in
contact with numerous Danish scholars (see B. Kornerup, Biskop
Hans Poulsen Resen, 1928, pp. 66-8, and the literature there
cited). AJ became acquainted with him and his son-in-law Joh.
Freder (see next note) during his stay in Rostock in the autumn
of 1592. A number of Icelanders were students at Rostock in
this period, see PE01. Mom. IV 8-9. Two letters from Chytræus
to AJ are printed later in Apotribe, see III 96 and 98 and notes.
579-10 Joh. Frederum: Joh. Freder (1544-1604), Chytræus’s
son-in-law, professor in Rostock from 1572. Three letters from
him to AJ are extant (III 91—2, 105—6). Cf. preceding note.
5717-18 Philippus Nicolai: Ph. Nicolai (1556-1608) became
in 1601 priest of the church of St Catherine in Hamburg, in
which town AJ met him while he was abroad in 1602. Nicolai
later assisted AJ in getting Crymogæa printed, on which see
further Nicolai’s letters to AJ (III 108—16). Nicolai was an
industrious writer on theology; his collected works were pub-
lished after his death by Georg Dedeken (1617), who succeeded
him in his benefice. One of his theological works was translated
into Icelandic by Bishop GuSbrandur Porlåksson (Theoria vel
Specvlvm Vitæ Æternæ, Speigell eiliifs Liifs, Holum 1608; see
Islandica XIV 78). Nicolai dedicated one of his books to Bishop
GuSbrandur, see note to III 15318. Cf. Joh. Moller, Cimbria lite-
rata III, 1744, pp. 507-18. On his theological controversies, see
also B. Kornerup, Biskop Hans Poulsen Resen, 1928, pp. 350-1,
374-5, Martin Lindstrom, Philipp Nicolais kristendomstolkning,
Lund 1937.
