NOTES
in the bottom right-hand corner of the title-page, undoubtedly in
AJ’s hånd (the corner is damaged) : “Arng. Jonæ Exemplar pro-
prium; [håbet] etiam(?) Erratorum Typogr. [anno]tationem,
non ami[t]te(n)dum.” The following inscriptions have also been
written on the title-page by later owners of the book: On the
bottom half of the page, left-hand side: “in dextra IEHOVÆ
sortes meæ Thorlacus Arngrimius m.m.”—On the right above
AJ’s inscription: “Emit a Studioso literarum Sacrarum Solerti,
Thorcillo Othonis, Præpositi Regionis Rangarthings Clarissimi
- Anno 1704 — Haldor Enari f. Subjice te rationi — Sen.” On the
left below Porlåkur Arngrlmsson’s entry: “GPauli Fil. 1745”.
Finally, in pencil in the top right-hand space: “G.P.”—These
later owners are as follows: 1) Porlåkur Arngrimsson, AJ’s son
(1631-73), parson at StaSarbakki. 2) Porkell Oddsson (ca.
1678-1734), parson at Gaulverjabær from 1706. His aunt was
married to Porlåkur Arngrimsson’s brother Porkell. 3) Halldor
Einarsson (ca. 1678—1707), sheriff in Pingeyjarsysla. His
mother, Margrét, became step-mother of no. 2. 4) Gunnar Påls-
son (1714-91), rector at Holar 1742-53, thereafter parson at
HjarSarholt.
On the last leaf of the book, which is blank (follows p. 174),
is written the poem by AJ printed below in Appendix III no. 5,
see notes ad loc. Furthermore, a letter from Bishop Brynjolfur
Sveinsson to AJ has been stuck into the book, see above, p. 427.
Finally, engraved portraits of Ole Worm (from 1648) and AJ
(the earliest engraving, see above, pp. 29-30) have also been
inserted.
I know of no other corrected copies of Specimen nor of any
dedication-copy.
The text of the original edition is reprinted literally, apart
from the same modifications as have been made in editing AJ’s
other printed works. We need only note that 6 in our edition
usually reproduces the same character in the original edition, but
in a few instances it is used for 6 (= 6, as frequently in Icelandic
manuscripts of the period), e.g. III 23713 Sota-fell, Breidabol-
stad, 243® Bolstadar-aa. Further, for typographical reasons, ? in
the original edition has been replaced by æ in marginal notes and
footnotes in the following words: III 237 n. 2 pytonissæ, 2816
