note (not quoted on p. 171) reads thus: “Iomsburgum dictum et
Iulinum a qvo ortum et nornen traxisse Familiam Iuliam indubi-
tatæ se fidei documentis probare posse asseveravit me præsente
Illustris Rosekrantzius. Scriptor qvidam nuperus Polypragmon
Iomsburgum Vinetam qvoqve dici tradit, cujus supinam circa hæc
inscitiam ne lugerum qvidem Hellebori purgabit.” From this it
appears that Huitfeldt had read through Vedel’s excerpts and
added this note for his information.
It is naturally impossible to adduce conclusive evidence that
AJ translated or excerpted all the texts in question, but we can
point to no more likely author, and there are details in the ex-
cerpts themselves which are reminiscent of AJ’s method in his
later works (cf. Håkonar saga Ivarssonar, p. XVn).
An examination of the excerpts printed above reveals that the
following sources were used (see notes below) : Fagrskinna A
(nos. 1, 5, 8-10), Heimskringla (Gullinskinna, see below; nos.
1 (?), 6, 7), a list of bishops (no. 2), Hråa |)åttr heimska (no.
3; manuscript unidentifiable), Færeyinga saga (no. 4; on the
source, see note ad loc.). To these are then to be added Håkonar
saga Ivarssonar and Jomsvikinga saga, where in both cases the
source-manuscripts are lost.—The Heimskringla-excerpts are
probably all derived from the lost vellum Gullinskinna (see notes
to nos. 6 and 7), which it seems practically certain was in Den-
mark in the sixteenth century (see Kålund, Katalog, 1900, pp.
xiv-xv). It will be seen from the notes to nos. 6-7 that the other
Hkr.-manuscripts can hardly be considered in this connection
(and Jofraskinna moreover was scarcely in Denmark at this
time, see Kålund, op. cit. p. Xl).
No. 1. Vedel’s hånd. The family-tree has parallels in Fsk. 206
and Hkr. III 39 (except in the last generations, for which see
e.g. Fsk. 233; Hkr. III 100).—For the remark on Magnus the
Good, see Fsk. 211, Hkr. III 47~9 (Jvlinsburgenses through
some misunderstanding here stands for Vindr).—The verses
(Hugonis et Thiodolfi carmen) are probably to be taken as a
rendering of the verses in Fagrskinna 222-4, two verses by
PjoSålfr Arnårsson and a half-verse ascribed to Hugi Bryn-
dælaskåld. Hkr. III 82 has on the other hånd the correct attri-
bution to Illugi, so that Fsk. must be the source. On the other
